IRENA INNOVATION WEEK 2025: Innovation Week for the Energy Transition
IRENA Innovation Week 2025, organized by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Bonn, Germany, from June 10 to 13, 2025, brought together leaders, experts, academics, and industry stakeholders to discuss innovations that can accelerate the global energy transition. IRENA, a leading intergovernmental agency, supports countries in their energy transitions and promotes the sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy for sustainable development and a resilient future.
The workshop aimed to:
• Identify regulatory mechanisms that support the energy transition;
• Encourage multi-stakeholder dialogue and collective action;
• Modernize electricity grids for a sustainable future;
• Promote digitalization and AI in the energy sector. The ARSEL team, represented by the Deputy Director of Legal Affairs and Contractual Commitments Monitoring, accompanied by the Head of the Thermal Production Department, arrived in Bonn on June 11, 2025, and participated in the sessions on June 12 and 13. Key topics covered included:
• Digitization and AI: optimizing electrical systems, increasing the integration of renewable energies, improving security of supply, and transparency.
• International examples: Brazil, with 87% of its energy mix being renewable, demonstrates the importance of a favorable regulatory framework and digital integration for intelligent grid management.
• Productive use of energy: mini-grids, electrification of heating and cooking, energy-efficient appliances, and electric vehicles.
The workshop highlighted that innovation and digitization are essential for a successful energy transition. The involvement of young people and industry stakeholders is crucial, and innovation isn't just about technology: it also depends on the people and governance that drive these changes.
